Cyclist volumes, routes and the behaviour behind them

Volumes by movement plus the behaviour that explains them — who uses the cycle track, who rides the footway, and where the network fails.

Behaviour is the finding, not a footnote

Counting bicycles is straightforward. The useful part is what the riders do. A protected lane with strong volumes and no footway riding is working. The same volume with a third of riders on the footway and a steady stream of wrong-way movements is a lane that ends in the wrong place, or is blocked, or feels unsafe at the junction. That distinction only appears if the survey records behaviour alongside the count.

What we record

  • Cycle volumes by movement and by approach, in 15-minute bins
  • Infrastructure use — cycle track, carriageway, bus lane or footway
  • Wrong-way and non-compliant movements, and where they begin
  • Cyclist type where it changes design need — commuter, leisure, cargo, e-bike, delivery rider
  • Helmet-wearing rates and, where visible, group riding behaviour
  • Conflict and near-miss observations with vehicles and pedestrians
  • Directional and time-of-day profile for peak identification

Feeding a scheme, not just a report

Cycle data is usually commissioned to justify or evaluate an intervention: a new lane, a junction treatment, a modal filter, a bike-share siting decision. Before-and-after surveys on the same methodology are how the evaluation holds up, so we keep the specification stable and repeat it exactly when you come back after construction.

Frequently asked

Can you separate e-bikes and cargo bikes in the count?

Yes, where the footage resolution allows. E-bike and cargo share matters for lane width, ramp gradient and parking design, so it is worth specifying up front.

Do you count cyclists during a turning movement count?

Yes — cyclist movements are commonly added to a vehicle TMC from the same footage, which is far cheaper than a separate survey.

How do you measure near misses objectively?

By recording defined observable events — evasive braking, swerving, or a forced stop — rather than subjective judgement, with time stamps so any event can be reviewed on the original video.
